Artist Statement
I believe one purpose of art is to freeze a moment or mood in time, to pause life, either to have time to ponder about the object or to have the feeling that things are eternal and not subject to constant change and decay. I started out as a photographer when my father gave me a camera at age 13 and I captured numerous moments to preserve memories.
My eye would usually get stuck on some detail that represented the whole picture to me, so early on I focused on getting close in capturing the object and developed my skills in macro photography.
Emotional impact usually matters to me more than the actual object so I am always struck by color. Different colors create different moods so I take advantage of that and create lyrical “mood pictures”. Photos do not always capture intense moods so I also paint. The last twenty years I have explored acrylic painting and have moved to creating semi–abstract and abstract work with bold, multifaceted color.
Aside from color and texture my goal is to catch the mystery of the object and give the viewer a new angle to approach the subject. I transform the actual object into something fresh by emphasizing some detail, shape, color and/or rhythm so it can be seen at a deeper level, sometimes having spiritual quality. Creating a mood is crucial. I aim to inspire hope without negating the tough things in life.
